Activities to Do with People Who Have Autism

Doing ordinary activities can be challenging for people diagnosed with autism due to sensory issues and social and communication challenges. Because of this, families often avoid doing new activities with their children. While getting an autism treatment near Robeson may be able to help you address some issues, there are things you can do to help your child and enjoy new activities with them.

Fun Activities for Your Child with Autism

To help you determine the best activity for your child, consider observing them or following your child’s lead. We have also prepared a list of activities that may be fun to do with your child diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):

Legos – If you or your child is a Lego fan, why not build something with your little one? Either go with the classic Lego to build anything or buy a themed lego. Choose a theme after a movie they like, maybe Harry Potter. You can even watch the movie after!

Trains – Whether you want to watch a video about trains or show your child how to build model trains, it’s up to you. Either way, this could be a fun activity to do together.

Play video games – You can always start with simple games especially if it’s the first time for your child. Even if you aren’t very good or have never played before yourself, you can learn together or let your child teach you how it’s done.

Swimming – Consider enrolling your child with ASD in a swimming class. If they already know how to swim, go out swimming with them.

Hiking and walking – Are there parks near your home? Why not ask your child to go hiking with you. Even just taking a walk around the neighborhood can be a fun way to get out of the house and bond.

Creating things – Are you crafty? Why not teach your child some of your crafts or learn a new one with them? Even if you aren’t very crafty yourself it could be fun to learn together!

Caring for animals – If you don’t have a pet yourself and aren’t looking to get one to consider going over to the animal shelter. This could be rewarding for you and your child as well as the animals there.

Doing puzzles – Jigsaw puzzles are always fun. Buy a colorful puzzle or one with a theme they enjoy for you and your child and solve it together.

It may be challenging but don’t be afraid to try new things with your child. There are also many support services for parents of children with autism.
