ShineLight Social Skills Training Group Takes an Exciting Field Trip

Social skills are a vital part of our daily lives, shaping how we interact with others and navigate the world around us. For individuals with developmental delays, honing these skills can be a transformative experience, helping them thrive in various social situations. Recently, ShineLight’s social skills training facilitator, JaKayla Townsend, embarked on an exciting journey with her first cohort from our social skills groups in Fayetteville, NC. She was able to take them on a field trip to North Myrtle Beach. This trip was more than just a day at the beach; it was an opportunity to put essential social skills to the test and equip the participants with lifelong tools for success.

JaKayla’s vision for this trip was clear. “I wanted them to have a few days where they could relax and take the edge off, all while still having fun. The beach can improve your overall well-being, and getting exposure to the sun and ocean air is great for your mental health,” she explained. With this goal in mind, she set out with six students from the social skills training cohort, accompanied by five other clients of ShineLight, for a two-hour trip that would prove to be much more than a leisurely day in the sun.

Social Skill Honing

Throughout the trip, JaKayla focused on nurturing key social skills that are essential for personal and interpersonal growth. “On this trip, I wanted the students to learn self-discipline, respect, problem-solving, and physical skills. I believe each of the students touched base with all of those skills,” JaKayla explained.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Tanger Outlets, providing a practical opportunity for the students to learn about budgeting and making wise spending choices. JaKayla emphasized the importance of healthy decision-making, such as applying sunscreen before hitting the beach and wearing life jackets for those who couldn’t swim. These experiences were not just theoretical lessons but hands-on applications of skills that can make a real difference in the students’ lives.

Respect for Others

Respect for others is a fundamental social skill, and JaKayla ensured that this value was woven into every aspect of the trip. She shared, “Throughout the trip, we practiced respect by cleaning up after ourselves, helping others, and being mindful of our neighbors.” The students had the chance to demonstrate their respect for the environment and those around them, reinforcing the importance of empathy and consideration in social interactions.

Practical Skills Based On Experience

One of the key takeaways from this field trip was the opportunity for the students to apply real-world social skills in a practical setting. JaKayla explained, “Real-world social skills were important to me to experience on this trip because it showed the students that the ‘real world’ and where you practice social skills is not only in your daily routine back home in Fayetteville, NC, but wherever you go.”

Learning through experience can be incredibly powerful, especially for individuals with developmental delays. Being out in the field provided the students with the freedom and responsibility to apply what they had learned in a classroom setting to the real world. This hands-on approach enabled them to practice skills like decision-making, problem-solving, and interpersonal communication in a context that resonated with their everyday lives.

The trip not only provided an opportunity for social skill development but also a chance for everyone to appreciate the beauty of life and the joys of being in the moment.

When asked if she would attend another beach trip, JaKayla’s enthusiasm was palpable. “I would attend another beach trip,” she exclaimed, “I’m looking forward to next year’s trip!” This field trip was not just a day at the beach; it was a life-changing experience that will continue to impact the students’ social skills and overall well-being for years to come.
