What is the Neurodiversity Movement?

Simply put, neurodiversity is a concept centered around the idea that neurological makeup can vary greatly from individual to individual. Because of this variance, the neurodiversity movement also believes that everyone, regardless of their neurological makeup, deserved to be respected and celebrated as an equal member of the human race. The movement also believes that diagnoses such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder should be viewed as normal deviations that occur as genes divide – the same way some people are born with brown eyes and others with blue eyes.

Common Characteristics of Neurodiversity

The core of the neurodiversity movement is that everyone is different and should be appreciated for their differences. Just as neurotypical individuals vary greatly from person-to-person, so too do neurodiverse individuals. It is important to keep that in mind when examining some of the common characteristics of neurodiversity. Some commonalities of neurodiverse individuals may include repetitive language, differing abilities in communication styles and patterns, emphasis on routine and focused interests, differing degrees of social interaction, and social play.

Benefits of Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity truly enhances the world we live in. All individuals within the autism spectrum have exceptional abilities in one or more facets of their lives that should be celebrated as such. Individuals with autism have a unique way of processing and looking at life that can shine new light on the human experience. The aim of the neurodiversity movement seeks to recognize neurodiverse individuals as important members of society. Rather than expecting individuals with autism to adapt to societal norms, the neurodiversity movement aims to educate society on the many positive qualities of neurodiverse individuals. In doing so, the goal is for society to encompass the specific needs of the neurodiverse community and assimilate those needs into the so-called “normal behaviors” of the neurotypical community.
